How to Calculate SGPA and CGPA — KTU

A step-by-step guide for Kerala Technological University (KTU) students to calculate SGPA and CGPA for 2024 Scheme and 2019 Scheme using this calculator.

What is GPA?

GPA (Grade Point Average) is a number that represents your academic performance. In KTU, each subject you study is assigned a certain number of credits, and after the exam you receive a letter grade. That letter grade maps to a grade point value. GPA is the weighted average of all those grade points, where subjects with more credits have more influence on the result.

Think of it this way — a 4-credit subject matters more to your GPA than a 1-credit lab, because it carries more weight in the calculation.

KTU Grading System (2024 Scheme)

KTU uses a 10-point grading scale. The grades and their corresponding grade points for the 2024 Scheme are:

GradeGrade PointPerformance
S10Outstanding
A+9Excellent
A8.5Very Good
B+8Good
B7.5Above Average
C+7Average
C6.5Satisfactory
D6Pass
P5.5Pass (Minimum)
F0Fail
FE0Fail (Eligibility)
Ab0Absent

Grade points for the 2019 Scheme differ slightly — verify with your official KTU regulations.

What is SGPA?

SGPA (Semester Grade Point Average) is your GPA for one particular semester. It tells you how well you performed in that semester alone.

SGPA = (Sum of Grade Point × Credit for each subject) ÷ Total Credits in the semester

Example — Semester 1 with 3 subjects:

SubjectCreditGradeGrade PointEarned GP
Mathematics4S1040
Physics4A+936
Engineering Workshop1A8.58.5
Total984.5
SGPA = 84.5 ÷ 9 = 9.39

What is CGPA?

CGPA (Cumulative Grade Point Average) is your overall GPA across all semesters completed. It is not the simple average of your SGPAs — it is a weighted average based on the total credits of each semester.

CGPA = (Sum of Earned Grade Points across all semesters) ÷ (Sum of Total Credits across all semesters)

Every semester contributes to your CGPA based on the total credits it carries. Semesters with more credits have more influence, so consistent performance across all 8 semesters is important for a strong CGPA.

KTU CGPA to Percentage Conversion

For KTU 2024 Scheme and 2019 Scheme, the formula to convert CGPA to percentage is:

Percentage = CGPA × 10

Examples:

  • CGPA 9.00 → 90.00%
  • CGPA 7.50 → 75.00%
  • CGPA 6.20 → 62.00%

How to Calculate SGPA and CGPA Using This Calculator

1
Choose your Scheme

On the home screen, tap KTU 2024 Scheme if you joined from 2024 onwards, or KTU 2019 Scheme if you joined between 2019 and 2023.

2
Select your Department

Choose your branch — for example, Computer Science and Engineering, Civil Engineering, or Mechanical Engineering. Subjects and credits are pre-filled based on the KTU curriculum.

Lateral Entry Students — If you joined directly into the 3rd semester, you don't have Semester 1 and 2. Simply skip those semesters and start entering grades from Semester 3 onwards. Your CGPA will be calculated only for the semesters you fill in.
3
Select your Grades

For each subject, select the grade you received (S, A+, A, B+, B, C+, C, D, P, or F) from the dropdown. Credits are pre-filled but can be edited if needed.

4
Tap Calculate for each Semester

After entering grades for a semester, tap the Calculate button at the bottom of that semester card. The SGPA for that semester is shown immediately.

5
Your CGPA updates automatically

As you calculate each semester, your cumulative CGPA is recalculated and shown in the floating badge at the top of the screen.

6
View the full calculation breakdown

Tap View Calculations to see a detailed sheet — earned grade points per subject, the SGPA formula for each semester, and the final CGPA formula with all values filled in.

My Branch or Programme is Not Listed

If your branch, scheme, or programme does not appear in the KTU 2024 or 2019 sections, use the Other Schemes / Programs calculator. It is a fully flexible calculator where you can:

  • Add your own subjects and credits manually
  • Add or remove semesters as needed
  • Modify the grading system to match your programme's grade point scale using the Modify Grading System option

This works for KTU 2015 Scheme, MG University, Calicut University, and any other programme with a credit-based grading system.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is this an official KTU tool?

No. This calculator is built and maintained by an individual and is not officially affiliated with Kerala Technological University. Always verify your results on the official KTU portal.

Will my entered grades be saved?

Yes. Your grades are saved in your browser's session storage and remain intact as long as the browser tab is open. Closing the browser will clear the saved data.

How do I calculate SGPA if I have a backlog?

Enter F (0 grade points) for the subject you failed, or Ab if you were absent. The SGPA will reflect accordingly. Once you clear the backlog, update the grade and recalculate.

What is the minimum grade to pass in KTU?

The minimum passing grade in KTU is P (5.5 grade points) for both 2024 and 2019 Schemes. In the 2019 Scheme, lab subjects may use the LP grade (4 grade points) for practical pass. Check your programme regulations for exact criteria.

Can I use this for KTU 2015 Scheme?

Yes — use the Universal Calculator and update the grading system using Modify Grading System to match the 2015 Scheme grade points.

What is FE grade in KTU?

FE (Fail — Eligibility) means you were not eligible to write the exam, typically due to attendance shortage or not meeting internal assessment criteria. It carries 0 grade points, same as F.

My CGPA on this calculator differs from KTU results. Why?

Minor differences can occur due to rounding rules applied by KTU, or if your programme uses different credit values. Always treat this calculator as an estimate and verify with your official KTU result sheet.
